The discovery of a path or destiny-defining career is just a means to an end but not an end in itself. In the last discussion #2, we had in mind to discuss how to turn the provision that accompanies a vision into usable substance. To get into that, there is the need for a checkup especially with regard to the problem of depression. A depressed youth cannot discover himself let alone vision, the reason being that he’s sick, he has a disease. The word “depression” is more serious than the way the name is thrown about where people just because they miss an appointment will say they’re tired, they are depressed. Also, people, typically because they got to the dry cleaners shop a little bit late and found it closed, will say that they’re depressed.

Depression is not the same as having a bad day, disappointment, or grief.. It is a sickness and a disease. The simple definition of depression is a state of mind of absolute despondency and rejection. Depression also can be defined as a mental disorder that is characterized by the loss of interest and motivation, which impacts negatively on the performance of daily activities. The causes of depression can be attributed to a combination of biological, psychological and social sources of distress.

The cardinal signs of depression include low mood, loss of pleasure, guilt, hopelessness, disturbances in sleep and appetite, worthlessness, and wanting to die. Depression is one of the most prevalent of all non-psychotic disorders. In any given year, 7% of adults or 21 million Americans will suffer from depression. And 21%, or one in five Americans, will suffer from depression at one point in their lives. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the leading cause of disability globally. Five hundred thousand people in the United States between 18 and 54 attempt suicide annually. In 2012, over 35000 people took their own lives (Family Guide to Mental Health). Most of these people suffered from depression. With the right kind of treatment, depression can be a manageable condition.

There is a highly sensitive and specific screening test that is available in nine languages and equally reliable among Caucasians, Asians, African-Americans and Latinos called the PHQ-9. Scores on the PHQ-9 range from 0 to 27. A score of 10 or higher indicates hat depression is highly likely, and a score of 20 would be like having a blood pressure of 190/120, a real cause for worry. (See below to link to the PHQ-9 test.)

The short highlight above on what depression is, causes as well as the most commonly available tests are to help us appreciate where we are as well as who we are so that we will not be found wanting in the area of our health, especially mental health. Just as well as nations experience depression in their economy and we all know how it feels, depression as a disease can be fatal.

Availing yourself of the opportunity of a test by clicking on the provided link is a positive route to follow for if we are considering turning anything into wealth or a substance that can be exchanged for goods and services, health tops the priority. Health is wealth.

Moving forward, you will need to make an objective assessment of what you have in your hands as a chosen career or vision by asking yourself the question, which is how much value is my vision worth or how needed are my services out there. The whole idea of turning vision into wealth starts from finding a need anywhere around you and meeting it. There will always be a need that is yet to be met as long as the earth remains, not just one or two needs but as much in comparison with the number of human beings that are on the planet earth. Needs increase in life with development and, as long as we have what it takes to meet needs, we ourselves can not be in need. Most of the things that people don’t end up getting on a daily basis are their “wants” and not “needs.”

God is the supplier of “needs.” Just as no human being can survive without oxygen, but He positions each one of us ,including you, strategically to meet the needs of others and that is the logic. When you are able to weigh yourself in a mirror and very objectively, making the journey to the top becomes easier for the hopes of the instructed are better than the wealth of the ignorant. Self-assessment is the assignment before us and this lesson charges you with the request that you make the true analysis of what you are surrounded with right now, which are almost becoming the fence of offense, trying to keep you enveloped within the limited space.

It is important also that I ask you one profound question, and that pertains to your sources of help. What are your sources of help? The journey of life is our journey as individuals but when a problem presents itself as big, it’s not the time to turn back or quit, but it is the best time to ask for help. Help, first and foremost, should be sought by looking inward so that help can be gotten from within for use outside. To me personally my main source of help is God who made the heavens and the earth, and for as long as He remains my shepherd, I shall not want and He shall supply all my needs according to His riches and glory.

My suggestion is that you will need your source of help at this point for, without this help, life will become a struggle. This is my own position. It may differ from you. Our duty is to be useful but not according to our desire but according to our powers. Turn to your invisible source of help for approval. Then, we can take off into the skies. A flight by light indeed.

“Believe nothing on the face of tradition, even though they have been held in honor for many generations and in diverse places. Do not believe a thing because many speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past. Do not believe what you have imagined, persuading yourself that God inspires you. Believe nothing on the sole authorities of your masters or priests. After examination, believe what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto.”–Guatama Buddha

Get to work and hit the ground running, but prefer a small certainty before a big uncertainty.

See you next time.
